Make tracks to Bishop Auckland
The north-east is known for many things, especially when it comes to industry, and two of the most famous of these are surely coal mining and the railways. And it’s these two things, and their links, that are examined in this informative new show. Born out of the necessity to transport coal, both below and above ground, the development of the railways was powered by the mining industry. Coal fuelled iron, iron made rails, rails moved coal – the cycle was complete. This exhibition lets you uncover the story through the work of artists who witnessed this revolution, and those who have been inspired by it since.
Fuelling the Railway Revolution, opens 27 June, Mining Art Gallery, Bishop Auckland, aucklandproject.org
