Jess we can!
Jessica Pratt’s ‘Here in the Pitch’ album came out last spring, but I don’t suppose a week has gone by when I’ve not had it on my turntable. It’s her fourth album and I don’t think I’d be ruffling anyone’s feathers if I declared it her very best. It’s dreamy, but dreamy with an underlying sense of something else; it’s folky, but folky in a way that is full of mysterious nooks and crannies; it’s retro, but retro in a way that feels both modern and vital; and it’s a release that continues to unfurl it’s many hidden delights even after repeated listens. It also has a warm and breezy ambience – think subtle 1970s Brazilian rhythms – as well as a whole bunch of arresting lyrical concerns to explore. The revered Los Angeles artist made her breakthrough with her 2019 album ‘Quiet Signs’, but with ‘Here in the Pitch’ she’s really become one of the most idiosyncratic and distinctive songwriters of her generation. This will be one of those gigs when you’ll be held absolutely rapt. It’ll be a good place to be. DP
