Dry your eyes, folk fans
I say “the blues” but this pair – when asked nicely to talk about “their sound” – would probably describe their stuff as “cautionary tales”, “murder ballads” or simply “folk songs”. I’d add to that Americana Gothic, because their heavenly harmonies and haunting melodies are the very stuff of the deep-south with a side order of weird. You might also say that they pen love songs because the pair – Laura Coates and Andrew Wrigglesworth – are very much an item. I mean, have you seen them perform together? They have true chemistry, exchanging knowing glances as they harmonise their eerie, at times surreal lyrics over Andy’s patient, timeless ¾ strum. Every note plucked or sung by them is a work of love. Oh, yes! And every dark hour spent huddled together refining their sound in the dimly-lit backroom of their home on the Southern outskirts of Melbourne is a labour of love, too. Let yourself into their slightly off-kilter world when they visit Newcastle this July. GM
