Unexpected Item in the Bagging Area at Live Theatre
Truth be told, I cannot adequately describe this play within the word limit I’ve been given. A surreal semi-musical comedy, it follows the story of brothers Ken and Mark as they struggle to run Bell’s End, their late father Barry’s 24-hour garage, after he was brutally murdered by their uncle over a Lionel Richie LP. Once renowned for its famous “sausage sauce”, the garage has been struggling to attract customers since Barry took the recipe to his grave. But that’s not all - Ken and Mark must also contend with aliens, cockroaches, a vampire, a seductive talking till, and a terrifying serial killer known as the Mystery Shopper.
The staging is inventive, making use of two projectors, a music station featuring a theramin, and a wide array of props and costumes (all of the characters are played by three actors). Each act is introduced by a talking cockroach in a Hawaiian shirt. It’s that kind of play.
All in all, it’s a very enjoyable night out. When all the media about serious topics becomes draining, it’s sometimes nice to switch off your brain and watch a guy with a fake moustache doing karate moves on a vampire.
