BBC Proms heads north
Oh my giddy aunt! The brilliant JADE (pictured) is part of the BBC Proms at The Glasshouse this year. Yes – the JADE, of Little Mix fame. The Brit Award-winning local lass is headlining a one-night-only collaboration with Royal Northern Sinfonia and she will be performing hits from her back catalogue as well as a handful of unexpected covers. And – pleased to report – Royal Northern Sinfonia will be at the heart of the action over the long-weekend, leading large-scale concerts and new cross-genre work that demonstrates the range and creative possibilities of orchestral music today. Other highlights to look out for include Angeline Morrison (bringing her beautiful arrangements of folk songs regarding the Black British experience in ‘The Sorrow Songs’); acclaimed Music Director Dinis Sousa leading Royal Northern Sinfonia and a fantastic line-up of soloists; Soweto Kinch (with a special edition of the nightly Radio 3 jazz programme ‘Round Midnight’ – this one at The Fire Station in Sunderland); a CBeebies Prom: Wildlife Jamboree; Sean Shibe (the guitarist – and friends – will be celebrating the centenary of Pierre Boulez’s birth); and plenty more besides. This year sees The Glasshouse become the first BBC Proms venue outside of London to host TV broadcasts, so expect this one to be extra special. DP
