Sunderland’s Carrie Hawkins studied classical music but her debut album is replete with pop tunes galore. There’s a gloriously La La Land-like theatricality to these tracks: opener ‘Tonight’s The Night’ sounds like the kind of thing a plucky heroine would belt out when the curtain falls. Elsewhere the likes of ‘In Mumbai Tonight’ gets the sultry ballad treatment, while ‘She’s Going Rogue Again’ dials up the late-night jazzy inflections. Super stuff. DP
