I did worry that this collaboration between fiancés Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco may be a little too sickly sweet for me, but the power of this duo runs deeper than their romance. Blanco’s prowess as a producer gives Gomez that extra step up to reach new heights - when she’s being vulnerable, her heartfelt lyrics linger through reverb, mournful backing vocals and gentle instrumentation, yet when she’s being a pop star, she’s accompanied by bubbly beats, pulsing percussion and hazy vocal effects. The songwriting feels a little scattergun, with a lack of cohesiveness bringing the songs together, but it’s a strong collection of pop music nonetheless. LT
