Diamonds! Whiskey! Sorted!

If you’re in the market for an evening of prime American roadhouse country rock (and I can sense that you are) then get on board with Willa May and her rip-roaring band Diamonds & Whiskey, who are taking their Tyneside bow at The Cluny this June.

Willa May is actually Jennifer Lauren. She was something of a shy kid from western North Carolina who grew up dreaming of fronting her own band. Along the way there were many twists and turns – and unexpectedly difficult and sharp bumps – but by Jiminy she only went and did it. That was seven years ago but since then she has reached high and touched the clouds with her incredible band Diamonds and Whiskey. Also along the way, Jennifer Lauren even acquired an alter ego in the shape of Willa May – a front woman who is unapologetic, unleashed and (whisper it) slightly unhinged (in the best possibly way). Needless to say, fans have totally fallen in love with Willa May’ sass, humour and huge heart. The band has won a plethora of awards and with little wonder as their stuff is incredible – think: swampy guitar riffs and electrifying fiddle runs, glazed with siren vocals. Others have cooed over the band’s ability to merge a classic alt-country sound with an indie sensibility, which I think is pretty much on the button. DP
