Follow the Money

Joe Orton’s uproarious farce ‘Loot’ is coming to City Theatre Durham this June and July.

Joe Orton was on a real roll when he premiered ‘Loot’ in 1965. It was his third major production and followed the brilliant ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’. ‘Loot’ subsequently became a real smash-hit and went on to scoop several awards. The plot concerns two young thieves, Hal and Dennis. The pair rob the bank next to the funeral parlour where Dennis works and return to Hal’s home to hide the money. Hal’s mother has just died and the loot is stashed in her coffin… Orton’s stone-cold classic comedy is very funny, but it’s also something of a dark farce that pokes fun at everything from the Roman Catholic Church to the integrity of the police force.

Loot, Sunday 29 June-Saturday 5 July, City Theatre Durham, 2.30pm Saturday & Sunday, 7.30pm all other days, £9.50 (concessions Sunday, Monday & Tuesday £8.50), durhamcitytheatre.co.uk
