Doppelganger by Naomi Klein
When people started confusing the leftist journalist and author Naomi Klein and the conspiracy theorist Naomi Wolf, Klein realised she had a branding crisis on her hands (an irony that isn’t lost on her – she criticised the idea of branding yourself in her debut, No Logo). As she developed a fixation with Wolf, whose star was rising within what Klein calls the ‘Mirror World’ of disinformation, she realises that her dilemma is much bigger than her and Wolf alone. It’s indicative of a much bigger problem: our fractured relationship with the truth. Doppelganger explores some of the biggest issues of the past five years, from the anti-mask movement during the pandemic to the genocide in Gaza, in an academic but accessible way. It entertains as well as it informs, particularly with its bombshell revelation towards the end, making it one of the most thrilling non-fiction books I’ve read in years. MG
