Heart of the Matter

The wondrous Jadu Heart are bringing their sumptuously eclectic sound to The Grove in Newcastle on 6 June.

Jadu Heart are playing Newcastle on D-Day; and, in their case, that D might very well sound for dreamy. The duo, comprised of Diva Jeffrey and Alex Headford, have been my dream-pop duo of choice for a few years now, but their sound is continuing to evolve and has also taken in everything from shoegaze to grunge to folktronica to everything in-between. Over the course of four albums, from 2019’s ‘Melt Away’ to this year’s brilliant ‘Post Heaven’, they have run the full gamut of good stuff, sounding at times like Goldfrapp at their most pastoral (think: the warm breeze of Goldfrapp’s 2008 ‘Seventh Tree’ album) to MGMT at their frothy best. Jadu Heart came together while Jeffrey and Headford were studying at The British and Irish Modern Music Institute and they became known for their conceptual storytelling through their characters and their theatrical masks they donned during live performances. Later, they drew on their passion for gothic architecture and folk horror films, which saw them adding a psychedelic folk tinge to their output. But throughout their career, the one thing that has always been present and correct is their ability to pen an arresting melody, and that certainly comes over in spades on their latest album. It’s their best yet. DP
