The Late Shows get underway on Tyneside this May and one of the biggest draws is sure to be at Newcastle Castle where you’ll find The Late Shows Tavern.

I always find time during The Late Shows to visit Newcastle Castle because there’s an enormous amount of fun to be had. There’s just something especially thrilling about being inside those hallowed walls that really lifts my heart (I still coo over a vocal performance I experienced there in 2024 that was real heart-in-your-mouth stuff). And this year they’re really pushing the boat out by setting up the Blackbird Tavern inside the venue for a night of pure revelry. There will be music befitting of such grandiose surroundings, along with storytelling. There will also be a whole host of medieval miscreants on hand with all manner of performances throughout the night. Was my enjoyment of last year’s festivities enhanced by the booze that was on offer? Yes it was, but, of course, there will be non-alcoholic beverages on sale too. Entry is through the Garrison Room door – opposite the Bridge Hotel pub – and it’s worth getting down early due to the limited capacity (and popularity of the event). 14th century here I come… DP
