Meryl Streek - Songs For The Deceased

This second album from Irish avant-garde punk artist Meryl Streek is a beautiful yet harrowing examination of social inequality in Ireland. It’s filled with politically-charged rage, delivered via the searing passion of Streek’s vocals and his slam poetry-like lyrics. Snippets of news broadcasts and interviews on some of the darkest moment’s of the country’s recent history create a scrapbook of suffering that makes for a bleak yet vital listen. This severe sound is contrasted with moments of traditional Celtic instrumentation, a mournful reminder of how unattainable patriotism feels when such injustice is rife. Meryl Streek has created an incredibly important piece of art here. LT
