Detail

Hatton Gallery presents works by renowned American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997). The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to see such a large grouping of Lichtenstein’s work in the North East of England. It presents a group of 16 screen prints, a ceramic sculpture and loans from Tate and National Galleries of Scotland by the artist known for his paintings based on comic strips, advertising imagery, and overt adaptations of works of art by others. Focusing on the arresting, emotionally charged and/or ambiguous imagery typically found in romance and war comics, Lichtenstein believed the world of images could be reduced to abstract patterning while retaining their original intent as recognisable symbols of reality. The display examines how the artist’s work draws on art history while also responding to cultural and political change from the 1960s onwards.
