See the light

When Luxmuralis visit Durham Cathedral they always bring the WOW factor, and their latest showstopper ‘Space’ has to be seen to be believed.

Over the last few years Luxmuralis have lit up some of the UK’s finest cathedrals, but they actually took their bow in 2022 when Durham Cathedral became the first such building to host one of their artworks. And anyone who has had any experience of their extravaganzas will attest to the jaw-dropping nature of their light and sound installations. Their latest ‘Space’ will take visitors on an exploration through the galaxies and outer-space, and explore our ambition to adventure beyond. Visitors will enter the cathedral in darkness before journeying around the building, encountering vibrant projections in different areas, all accompanied by an immersive soundscape. From original footage of a rocket launch, to images of Earth, to galaxies of stars exploding before your eyes, the show will last around 45 minutes as the cathedral’s soaring columns are transformed by light. Andrew Usher, Chief Officer: Visitor Experience at Durham Cathedral: “It is a joy to welcome the artists behind Luxmuralis back to Durham Cathedral again. Following the success of last year, we released the tickets early so people can plan for their visit in October. We had a fantastic response to the artwork in the previous years and we urge people to get their tickets early to avoid any disappointment. With a different show, we can’t wait to see what Space brings to the cathedral this autumn.” The Dean of Durham, The Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming chipped in: “We are delighted to be hosting Space by Luxmuralis at Durham Cathedral. Christians believe that the heavens tell the glory of God, and there can be no better place than Durham Cathedral to help us wonder at stars and space, and reflect on our place within the cosmos.” If you have any breath in your body, be prepared to have it taken clean away.
