Work Experience

‘Working Lives’ at MIMA in Middlesbrough examines the creative lives of artists working in the Tees Valley and highlights the importance of artist groups and support structures that have been built by artists in the region.

This show highlights artworks from the 1880s up to the present day that are held in the Middlesbrough Collection. These will include both figurative and abstract pieces such as Sarah Cooney’s delightful 2019 painting ‘Evelina’ (pictured), which was acquired by MIMA in 2020. These will be shown alongside pieces loaned by contemporary artists connected with the Cleveland Art Society – a group that are celebrating their 140th anniversary. A new film, made with artificial intelligence, will also be shown, which asks questions about what collections mean to different people.
