Your new favourite artist...

North-east based Melanie Baker is an indie star in the making and she’s playing Newcastle this April.

Melanie Baker is actually from the Lake District, but she’s now made a home for herself in Newcastle. And the first thing that grabbed me about her stuff is her lyrics, which delve deep into her sundy loves, her friendships, and her life in general. She mixes just the right amount of angst with the kind of infectious guitar riffs that’ll get even the most moridbund of you up and dancing. ‘Burnout Baby’, her latest EP, captures that raw feeling that hits when all your plants have died and you have a dread of scrolling for too long – which definitely feels relatable these days (note: the EP is reviewed on page 57). I’m really looking forward to Baker’s Newcastle gig and I reckon you should be too. As the headline says: you’re about to discover your new favourite artist. MW
