Six Chick Flicks

The manifold virtues of  Northern Stage must include its habit of skimming the comedy cream from the fringes of the Edinburgh Festival and pouring it out for a local audience. This time, though, they’ve caught a show that was an off-Broadway success even before it was show-cased in Scotland - but don’t worry about culture clashes. Its writers/performers have already detected a slightly darker taste in comedy on this side of the Atlantic, and promise they’ve taken due account of our metric system too, but anyway, their material reflects one of those universal artistic institutions that leaps across all barriers to light a flame in every sensitive human heart – the Chick Flick. Yes, it’s all there in the sub-title: (…or a Legally Blonde Pretty Woman Dirty Danced on the Beaches while writing a Notebook on the Titanic.) That’s three decades of girly viewing right there (chaps invited but only if ready to ride the emotional roller-coaster and laugh and cry in the right places.) This is a funny, fast paced two-gal tribute to those movies you watch with your mates, several bottles of supermarket Chardonnay and an industrial size pizza or two. As Kerry Ipema and KK Apple first met each other in an improv practice group you can expect them to bounce a few ideas off their audience, but this just adds an edge to their affectionate parody of the glorious romantic/dramatic/comic triumph of shiny cinema over dowdy life which is the Chick Flick.
