Sunderland's Hot New Hope

Chloe Gardner fronts up Sunderland’s Chloe & The Brainwaves, a band who are being whispered about in hushed tones after just one single. They’ve got a gig in their hometown in early December.

Chloe and other band members Alex, Michael and Lewis have been playing together since their teens and they certainly dovetail together perfectly on their single ‘Expensive Things’, which is one of the most arresting debuts I’ve heard in a while. It’s a track that oozes alt-rock confidence and is slightly goth-singed, with shades of dream-pop 1980s shoegazers Lush. An anti-consumerist anthem, it’s built around some bravura melodic hooks and has a chorus that grabs you by the lapels from the get-go. The band cite all manner of influences, from Radiohead to Taylor Swift, Haim to Led Zeppelin, and look destined for great things. And their gig in Sunderland promises to be a real doozy as support comes from Midnight Rodeo, a Nottingham art-pop outfit whose psychedelic bent was very much to the fore on their three singles for Fat Cat Records. Get to it! DP

Chloe & The Brainwaves + Midnight Rodeo, Friday 8 December, Independent, Sunderland, 7.30pm, £8, independentsunderland.com
