Tees Time

‘People Powered: Stories from the River Tees’ at MIMA focuses on histories and folk tales that explore how the River Tees has shaped the region.

This exhibition – which sees MIMA working in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery – features pieces from the National Portrait Gallery that have connections to Middlesbrough and the River Tees, including Elisabeth Frink’s rather stately and glorious ‘Herring Gull’ from her 1974 Seabird Series (pictured). But the exhibition also showcases plenty of new commissions, too, including work from local artists – as well as from young people working with established artists such as Bobby Benjamin and Diane Watson. Surrounding the exhibition will be an action-packed programme of events relating to the river and surrounding area. Grab the full lowdown from MIMA’s website, below. GM

People Powered: Stories from the River Tees, MIMA, Middlesbrough, until 7 January 2024.
