Sculpting Air

Throughout 2023, the wonderful Buy The Kilo at Tynemouth Metro Station have been highlighting ecological concerns. Showing work at their latest show is artist Kathryn Maguire.

Each new news report seems to bring us catastrophic stories from around the world in regards to climate break down. From fires to floods, the results of government inaction are all around us. Increasingly, artists are focusing on these issues and one of the venues giving them a platform is the gallery located inside Buy The Kilo. In September they have Kathryn Maguire, an Irish artist, who is showing a photographic piece called ‘Brake Dust’. This explores the idea of what air pollution might look like if it were imagined as a sculptural object. This is the first in a series of works using crystallography to imagine the unimaginable and indecipherable. The individual casts are scaled-up models of crystal magnetite, which is an iron ore.
