Surfing the New Wave

Brighton go-getters Youth Sector are the art-rock saviours putting the new into new wave, and they’re playing The Engine Room in North Shields at the back end of June.

Brighton is renowned for having a vibrant live music scene, and it’s often hard for skinny types with guitars to stand out from other skinny types with guitars, but Youth Sector are making a real fist of it. And they’re doing so by dint of their sharp as a dart sound that comes on like Talking Heads sharing smarts with Devo while The B-52s frug deliriously in the background. It’s a sound bereft of bluster with the band standing tall on the strength of their infectious melodies, which are many and tumble forth in the most pleasing of fashions. The band have received support from the likes of Tom Robinson, Huw Stephens and Abbie McCarthy, and have shared stages with Goat Girl and The Pale White, and they’re now ready to swagger around the country on headline duties. Support in North Shields comes from Newcastle’s own indie-punkist on a post-pop high: Bugman. DP
