57 Varieties...

57 emerging artists will be celebrated this June at an exhibition that is always one of the highlights of the north-east cultural summer: the Newcastle University Fine Art Degree Show.

I love these degree shows as they give you a real snapshot of what’s happening in the contemporary art world (and, hey, I like to think I’ve got a good eye for spotting the next Hepworth or Hockney). As mentioned above, there will be 57 artists showing work this year including Maya Aomatsu (that’s her piece ‘XXXXX’ pictured), Ellie Denton, Julia Bamber and Jemima Cecil. A whole raft of disciplines will be represented that takes in sculpture, painting, film, photography, sound, text, performance and textiles, with the students overcoming the challenges and disruption caused by Covid to give us work that is both rich and thrumming with creativity. Miss it and miss out. RM
