Blake’s Progress

‘I, Daniel Blake’, the stage play, is premiering at Northern Stage this May.

Ken Loach’s 2016 film ‘I, Daniel Blake’, which detailed a 59-year-old carpenter’s fight against bureaucratic forces as he tried to get himself back on his feet after surviving a heart-attack, won a huge swathe of awards. Also among the honours was its star Dave Johns, who has penned this new version. He commented: “I didn’t just want to put the film on stage. I wanted to update the story for 2023, making it contemporary and exploring more of single mum’s Katie’s journey and the family unit she forms with Daniel.” Taking the role of Daniel Blake is David Nellist, who recently won plaudits for his part in ‘Love It If We Beat Them’ at Live Theatre. Bryony Corrigan plays Katie, with the other roles being filled by Kema Sikazwe, Janine Leigh, Micky Cochrane and Jodie Wild. This promises to be one of THE must-sees of the summer. GM
