Emotional Dance Times Two

Dance City have got a fabulous double bill coming up in June by two of the world’s most feted female choreographers, both of whom have won rare praise for their ability to tackle contemporary issues.

Aussie Penny Chivas (pictured) has won huge acclaim for ‘Burnt Out’, a solo dance theatre work that is centred around our changing climate. Weaving spoken word and movement, she takes us on a journey that involves bushfires – both their ignition and the devastation they cause. Bringing together both past and future, fact and personal lived accounts, ‘Burnt Out’ is at once an intimate personal story and a universal meditation and reflection. Payal Ramchandani’s ‘Just Enough Madness’ meanwhile is concerned with our mental health. The dance – acting as a bridge between western classical traditions and Carnatic music – takes audiences through a wondrous journey of the mind, unravelling its complexity in the context of Hindu mythology and the present day. These two productions represent dance theatre at their thrilling best.

Burnt Out + Just Enough Madness, Friday 16 June, Dance City, Newcastle, 7pm, £15 (student £12.50), dancecity.co.uk
