The Crack Magazine

bigfatbig are one of the north-east bands worth getting very excited about in 2023, and you can find out exactly why when they hit The Ship Isis in Sunderland this February.

bigfatbig cite New Jersey’s The Front Bottoms as one of their biggest influences, and you can certainly hear something of TFB’s pell-mell pop-punk in their sound. But – to my mind – bigfatbig are very much their own thing. Their stuff has a gum-snapping vibe that is brash without being abrasive. “I can guarantee you’ve never had one original thought” they tell a “boy with a guitar” who is “here to tell me something new”. That’s from ‘Shut Up!’ – as deft a slap down of pale and uninteresting types that you’re liable to hear. Of course, pointed lyrics can only take you so far. What makes this pair so exciting is that they also pen memorable melodies that are full of bigfatbig hooks. And – and! – they can actually sing. Fancy that. They’ve already had airplay on BBC 6 Music – and played Radio 1’s Big Weekend – but I reckon 2023 is going to be even bigger for them. DP
