Fancy a Jar with Olivia

The wonderful Jam Jar Cinema are screening lots of films over the coming months that look all set to dominate the awards season (including ‘Empire of Light’ starring Olivia Colman – pictured).

I love going to the cinema in the early months of the year, particularly as screens tend to be given over to quality dramas rather than daft superheroes. And the Jam Jar Cinema in Whitley Bay is pulling out all the stops in 2023 with a line up featuring plenty of big hitters such as the aforementioned ‘Empire of Light’. The latest from director Sam Mendes, it’s set in the early 1980s and has been billed as a love letter to “the pictures”. Cate Blanchett, meanwhile, has been tipped for an Oscar for her performance in ‘Tár’ in which she plays Lydia Tár, widely considered to be one of the greatest living composer-conductors. Another real must-see is ‘The Whale’ which sees Brendan Fraser (also tipped for an Oscar) returning to the big-screen in Darren Aronofsky’s latest. Also on the horizon are ‘The Fablemans’, ‘Babylon’, ‘Knock At The Cabin’ and ‘The Son’. If you’ve not yet had the pleasure of Jam Jar Cinema then you should know that it’s one of friendliest venues around. If you have had the pleasure, then I’ll expect you’ll be pencilling the above films into your diary forthwith. DP
