Shooting Stars

Football-inspired artwork is on display at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, which features work from 50 artists.

I love Christy Burdock’s ‘Grace and Eloquence’ (pictured), which shows two women footballers playing in a park. She comments: “When I watch professional footballers playing they look to have the grace, eloquence and poetry of ballerinas. The work reflects both the poetry and skill of footballers.” And her drawing is just one of the plethora of pieces – which also take in painting, photography and mixed media – that make up the Football Art Prize. Fittingly, the show also includes striking (ahem!) pieces from Robert Soden and Mick Kirkbride – both huge Sunderland fans. To coincide with the exhibition, the museum has created a learning and engagement programme of activities – details of which can be gleaned from their website, below. RM
