Open For Business

Gallagher & Turner’s ‘Open Exhibition’ is becoming an annual fixture over the festive season. Featuring pieces from some of the region’s most exciting artists, it never fails to delight (and, yes, all works are for sale).

I love Errol Theunissen’s vibrant oils (that’s his ‘Juice, Crisps and Chill’ pictured). The self-taught painter and illustrator is originally from Zimbabwe, but now lives in Middlesbrough. His work was included in 2021’s Open Exhibition at Gallagher & Turner and it’s great news that he’s back. The show this year also includes recognised G&T artists such as Jill Campbell and Gavin Watson; lecturers such as Erika Servin and Professor Kevin Petrie; and current students such as Maddie Fox. Also back is Johnnyx, an artist really causing waves (don’t miss his nicely demented ‘Batman in Yellow Scarf’ at this year’s show). In all, sixty-two artists and makers are represented this year, with over eighty works on show – including painting, drawing, print, ceramics and more. So, if you’re looking for the kind of gift you just won’t find in John Lewis (or something for yourself), then you know where to go. DP
