An Outsider Comes In

David A. Jaycock is a true outlier of the UK music scene, and he’ll be sprinkling his beguiling magic all over North Shields this December when he visits The Engine Room.

David A. Jaycock, then. What is he? Well, he’s been nominated for a prestigious BBC2 folk-award, but this guitarist/composer likes to operate on the very fringes of the genre, bringing both psych and electronic elements into his work – while also playing footsie with baroque pop (1970s edition). He’s worked with Marry Waterson on two very well received albums (she did most of the singing, he provided the subtlest of musical backdrops). He’s also recorded with James Yorkston who called Jaycock “a great English outsider”. And this should be a great gig as also on the bill is Ren Lawton, a supremely talented fellow who was born in London but now calls Newcastle his home. BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson has sung his praises, and Lawton’s warm folky sound is certainly gaining him a huge following with over a million and a half Spotify streams for his track ‘Piece of Your Heart’ alone.
