Cinematic Showing

A series of new artworks are showing at the Tyneside Cinema that celebrate the venerable institution’s 85th anniversary.

Simon Drysdale, Interim Chief Executive of Tyneside Cinema: “We have a really fascinating archive here at the cinema, which includes everything from papers dating from the 1930s – when the cinema first opened – to photos from events across the years, like the Tyneside Gay Film Festival.” To that end, artists Colette Whittington and Tim Brunsden (that’s a detail from their installation pictured), Adina Nelu and Sofia Barton were given access to this feted archive to have a good rummage and produce a body of work that reflects different aspects of the cinema. From installations, to poster prints, to audio-visual pieces, this show takes in everything from Bollywood to LGBTQI+ safe spaces.
