Modern Times

Newcastle’s Hatton Gallery are currently showcasing a startling selection of twentieth century masterpieces that must not be missed.

Julie Milne, Chief Curator of Art Galleries at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, said of this show: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our visitors to enjoy the Hatton Gallery’s twentieth century art collection, with pictures created by some of the most influential artists of the time.” She’s not lying! Highlights include important paintings by Francis Bacon (that’s his ‘Study for Figure VI’, 1956-1957, pictured), Prunella Clough (her 1964 painting ‘The District Line’ shows an early example of her move towards an abstract style), Patrick Heron, Keith Vaughan and Brett Whiteley – the Hatton owns one of only three canvases by the celebrated Australian artist that are held in the UK. Run, don’t walk. GM
