Shades Indoors? What About it!

When you’ve been hailed as the true heir to Lou Reed, those shades are not going to leave your face – inside or out. Brace yourself for Shilpa Ray.

A cursory glance at the tracklist for Shilpa Ray’s latest album ‘Portrait Of A Lady’ (released in April) will reveal tracks with titles such as ‘Heteronormative Horseshit Blues’, ‘Bootlickers of the Patriarchy’ and ‘Manic Pixie Dream Cunt’. In short: she’s not pitching for the Harry Styles crowd. But the Brooklyn based singer-songwriter is something of a cult figure who is yet to win the kind of huge audience she surely deserves. Maybe ‘Portrait Of A Lady’ is the album that will finally see her break big. It’s a wild-ride of a release, taking in everything from swoony 50s pop, Iggy and the Stooges scuzzy rock, jagged Blondie-isms, pell-mell punk-outs, and 80s electronica. It’s an album that documents abuse of power and the many ways that people survive it. It’s soulful, playful, funny and sticks the boot in when required. She has previously toured with, and been lauded by, the likes of Patti Smith and Nick Cave, but this current tour sees her on headlining duties. It’s where she deserves to be. RM
