Street Life

Currently showing at the Side Gallery is ‘Classic Street Style: Weegee, Doisneau, Foysyth’ featuring work from three masters.

Weegee is perhaps the most famous of all ‘street’ photographers. His stark, black and white photographs of New York helped define the city, from kids playing by a gushing fire hydrant, to the aftermath of a gangland assignation. One of my favourite shots of his, ‘Simply Add Boiling Water’ (pictured), is included in this show. Another big hitter is Robert Doisneau whose most famous picture you’re sure to know: ‘The Kiss by the Hotel de Ville’ (which features a couple kissing in the busy street of Paris). The image became a symbol of young love in Paris, and you can see it at Side Gallery. And, pleased to report, holding his own in such exalted company is Jimmy Forsyth, a revered local photographer who documented the changing face of Newcastle’s West End. Time to hit the streets. RM
