Moor's The Merrier

‘Beyond the Moor Festival’ is a music extravaganza at Gosforth Civic Theatre showcasing the best in contemporary and alterative folk and roots music.

Wow. That’s the word that danced gleefully around my lips when I clocked the line up for this inaugural festival, which is packing real heat. Headlining are the jaw-dropping Flook (pictured), the BBC Radio 2 Folk award nominees who cook up a sound that blends fiery technical brilliance with traditionally rooted tunes and precise acoustic grooves. Elsewhere on the bill you’ll find Nancy Kerr and James Fagan (one of the best-known – and most-loved – folk duos on the circuit), Withered Hand (aka Dan Willson, a cult figure on the Scottish scene since 2009), Holly and the Reivers (one of the most exciting folk and trad bands to come out of the north-east in years), Ryan Young (twice BBC Radio 2 Young Folk finalist), Amy Thatcher and Francesca Knowles (accordion and percussion duo who also use drums, synths, keys and vocals) and Tim Dalling (songs of poetry, love, animals and drink – to the accompaniment of a funky piano accordion). There will also be street food, a workshop with Tim Dalling, and free-flowing bon homie galore. DP

Beyond the Moor Festival, Saturday 24 September, Gosforth Civic Theatre, Newcastle, 1pm, £35.
