One of the north-east’s most famous – some might say infamous – clubs The New Monkey is making a triumphant return to Sunderland’s Trilogy nightclub this August.

As any clubbing veteran will tell you, The New Monkey actually began life as The Blue Monkey and it was located on Bedford Street in Sunderland. It was one of THE places to be in the north-east during the 1990s and it attracted an enthusiastic crowd of revellers who were true 24-hour party people. The club was destroyed by fire but it reopened again in 1999 in the former Plazo Bingo Hall under the name The New Monkey. It survived many objections from local residents, and had to operate without a drinks licence, but it finally closed in 2006 after a police raid. The club has since made intermittent returns and this latest event is scheduled for the summer bank holiday weekend. Thrills will ensue. JL
