Nice Drop of Brandy

Is anyone writing better country songs at the minute than Brandy Clark? I’m saying no. She’s coming to Sunderland in early September.

Brandy Clark grew up in the tiny lumber town of Morton in Washington and forged her reputation by co-writing songs for other artists including Miranda Lambert’s ‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ and Kacey Musgrave’s superb ‘Follow Your Arrow’, which took a line on sexuality and drugs that country music often shies away from (“Make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls, if that’s something you’re into, when the straight and narrow, gets a little too straight, roll up a joint, or don’t.”) As you’d expect, her own stuff is dripping in quality and her solo debut ’12 Stories’ was acclaimed as one of the best country records of the year. 2020’s ‘Your Life Is A Record’ was another step up again; a warm and intimate set of songs that received rave reviews across the board from Pitchfork to AllMusic who opined: “An album that feels like a classic not just through its sound but through its depth of feeling.” Clark has now been nominated for 10 Grammys and you can find out why when she visits the region this September.
