Anyone for Mycelium?

Mycelium is a root-like structure of a fungus consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae. It’s also the name of Newcastle University’s post graduate degree show.

I’m sure there’s a good reason this show is called ‘Mycelium’, but that reason is like an errant, helium filled balloon to me at present (i.e. I can’t grasp it). No matter. These shows are always well worth checking out as they’re filled to the brim with exciting new artistic talent and bring together mid-point and graduating artists on the MFA and PhD programmes. Painting, drawing, sculpture, weaving, film, performance, sound works, and more, are all represented from 28 artists including Andrew Parr (work pictured), Kirsty Woods, Mia Hayward, Yusuf Ghani, Qirui Tan, Hannah Morris, Amy Dover, and many more. Get yourself along and see if you can truffle out that all important mycelium connection. RM

Mycelium: Newcastle University Post Graduate Degree Show, 20 August-3 September (excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays), Hatton Gallery and Fine Art Department, Newcastle.
