Buckley! Butler! Sorted!
Bernard Butler, of course, has one of the most enviable back catalogues in pop, through his guitar work with Suede, as well as stuff with the likes of David McAlmont. For his latest album he’s teamed up with Jessie Buckley, an Irish actor who has excelled on screen and stage (she won the 2021 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret). On ‘For All Our Days That Tear the Heart’ the pair have produced a mesmerising, folk-inflected album, which really showcases Buckley’s magical voice. As the Guardian noted: “She can be puckish, yearning, impossibly weary, intimate – and that’s all on one track – 20 years a Growing. What stays with you are moments like Buckley’s startling cackle at the close of kiss-off ballad Beautiful Regret – the sound of someone rightly relishing their good work, knowing how lucky they are.” It’s a real coup for Whitley Bay Playhouse to bring them our way so whatever you do don’t miss this one. It’s got Gig of the Summer written all over it.
