Why Are This Lot So Happy?

They’re happy because Country Durham has been shortlisted for UK City of Culture status.

And then there was four. From a longlist of 20, there are now just four locations competing to secure UK City of Culture status in 2025. Bradford, Southampton and Wrexham Country Borough are all in the running, but we’re fully behind D2025 (that’s some of their movers and groovers, pictured) who are pushing the claims of County Durham. And they recently issued a rallying cry to the entire region, urging everyone to continue to support the campaign as it moves into the crucial final stage. Cllr Amanda Hopgood, Leader of Durham County Council: “Our success at making it this far is of course testament to our county’s incredible heritage, landscapes and vibrant cultural offer. Securing the title would place our extraordinary people and places at the heart of an unforgettable and inclusive programme of events.” The winner will be announced in May.
