Dance Macabre

Portugal’s Vortice Dance Company are bringing Dracula to Darlington. It’s an evening show only, of course.

When the choreographers of Dracula – Claudia Martins and Rafael Carrico – were pulling this piece together, they didn’t just rely on Bram Stoker’s novel for inspiration. They’ve also drawn on further legendary tales, myths and fears, which still haunt us today. Of course, Stoker’s late-Victorian masterpiece is the key text and the beginning of the play is rife with highly suggestive ideas taken from the novel’s original course of action – but it’s now entangled with new ideas, which mysteriously swerve from it. You may think you know this character – dubbed “the Lord of the Undead” – but this production will give you a whole new perspective on Dracula, the most famous character in all of gothic horror. GM

Dracula, Tuesday 17 May, Darlington Hippodrome, 7.30pm, from £16.50. darlingtonhippodrome.co.uk
