Spiers! Boden! Class!

Are Spiers & Boden the finest duo on the traditional folk scene. Many think so. They’re in Sunderland in early June.

What an extraordinary career Spiers & Boden have had. They burst onto the scene back in 2001 and were soon hoovering up awards like no one’s business – including a whole clutch of prestigious BBC Radio Folk gongs. They then went on to form and front the extraordinary Bellowhead – an eleven-piece outfit that took folk and bent it into some outrageously interesting shapes, via dance and shanty sounds. Then, Spiers & Boden got back together in 2021 to record a brand new album ‘Fallow Ground’, which had the likes of the Guardian frothing: “The pair are still the dons.” It’s a release that pulls together tracks from antique sources, which are augmented by a clutch of originals, and features much boisterousness including jigs, hornpipes and waltzes. In short: they’re back. GM
