Folk Legend Approaches

Martin Carthy has been described as being arguably the greatest English folk song performer. (And writer. And collector. And editor.) He’s playing Durham this January.

Martin Carthy has always championed little rinky dink venues as he knows that folk music really speaks to people when he can see the whites of their eyes. And venues don’t come much rinkier (or indeed dinkier) than the wonderful Old Cinema Laundrette in Durham (which had a shout out on Mark Radcliffe’s weekend show the last time I listened to it). Carthy, of course, has long been one of folk’s greatest innovators and has enjoyed trailblazing partnerships with – among many others – Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick, Norma Waterson (his wife) and Eliza Carthy (his daughter). He has also influenced a huge swathe of megastars from Bob Dylan to Paul Simon, and he remains a captivating performer in the live arena. If you’ve not fallen under his unique spell before then you’ll not get many better opportunities than this. GM
