Sonic Boffin Ahoy!

Caribou (the project, if you will, of the wonderful Dan Snaith) are bringing wonderments to Sage Gateshead.

If you like electronica, then Caribou is certain to have something to suit you. He first hovered onto a lot of taste-makers radars back in the early 00s (a time when taste-makers weren’t even called taste-makers). During this period, he was putting out tunes that were thrumming with psychedelia, motorik beats and Boards of Canada-style wistfulness. All good. Later, he would find favour with the Ibiza crowd with dancefloor fillers such as ‘Sun’, which also opened him up to festival crowds. But, for my money, his greatest triumph remains his most recent album: 2020’s ‘Suddenly. It’s a long-player that plays to Snaith’s melodic strengths, with songs packed with hooks and poppy know-how. It also had dancefloor bangers rubbing shoulders alongside more reflective tracks, which might sound jarring, but was something that worked quite beautifully. With such an enviable back-catalogue of work, his Sage gig should be chock-a-block with highlights. DP
