You Flirty Rats

I’m in love! And the object of my amour is a band from Rotterdam named Rats On Rafts. They’re playing North Shields this December. Oh Rats On Rafts! Where have you been all my life? I only got on board with this year when they released their startlingly good album ‘Excerpts From Chapter 3: The Mind Runs A Net Of Rabbit Paths’ (yep! That’s what they called it). It’s a bracing mix of post-punk and modern lo-fi, by way of some rattlingly good, Arcade Fire-like grandstanding, and comes on like someone shoving a Hoover up your jumper. The band have previously released a collaborative album with Dutch underground punk/brass ensemble De Kift and have played everywhere from Glastonbury to Eurosonic to Le Guess Who. These days they are fawned over by the likes of Franz Ferdinand whose lead singer, Alex Kapranos, recently frothed: “I love Rats On Rats. Go see them play live even if you have to travel to Rotterdam.” Thankfully, we don’t have to go that far to check them out this month as they’re at the wonderful Engine Room in North Shields. THIS is going to be special. DP

Rats On Rafts + James Leonard Hewitson, Thursday 9 December, The Engine Room, North Shields, 7pm, £10.
