Food & Drink Reviews

The Newcastle pub City Tavern has just trousered the prestigious Best Spirits Pub at a national award ceremony. I’ll drink to that.

I’ve always known that City Tavern served up the best spirits and cocktails around and, hey, it seems that other people have noticed too. The pub has beaten off competition from 2,500 other pubs in the UK to claim this award, which is run by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars. The iconic establishment is operated by Newcastle born-and-bred David King and the judges were impressed by his commitment to giving customers perfection as well as the pub’s employment of their own mixologist. Their ever-changing roster includes 80 gins, 40 rums and 40 whiskeys, which are all hand-picked, with King visiting trade shows and distillers to find interesting new tipples (they’ve even got hard-to-find vintage and antique spirits, sourced from auctions). The judges also got into a lather about the pub’s cocktails, noting how every detail was perfect, from the style of glass through to the ideal garnish. The team also scored top marks for creating individual cocktails for customers hosting special events at the pub. City Tavern has already nabbed Star Awards for Best Pint and Best Cask Ale and my only worry is for their mantelpiece: is it big enough to keep all these trophies?
