Wake for the Dreaming (Butterfly Effect/Spooker Rekkids)

I’ve been excited by this north-east band since they first stuck their heads above the parapet, and their debut album doesn’t disappoint. They are veritable folk-rock-opera alchemists and pushing a progressive sound, here in the service of a concept album influenced by Neil Gaiman’s epic ‘Sandman’ series of graphic novels (really). Their polyrhythmic beauty manages to sound like everyone from Sufjan Stevens to Alt-J to The Beta Band to The Unthanks, but, in truth, they’re very much their own thing, and, boy, what a thing!
