The Spontaneous Players are bringing ‘Spontaneous Potter’ to Durham’s Gala Theatre in January. Prepare yourself for magic of a very wonky kind.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Commerce. Harry Potter and the Neville Wears Prada. Harry Potter and the Rise of the Planet of the Snapes. Harry Potter and the Struggle for a Decent Mortgage in This Economy. That’s just some of the titles that the Spontaneous Players have managed to fashion into an uproarious night out at the theatre – with live musical accompaniment. The troupe were founded in 2015 and cut their teeth with ‘Spontaneous Sherlock’, which went on to become a real sensation at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015, 2016 and 2017, with over 6000 people seeing the show each year. ‘Spontaneous Potter’ first saw the light of day in 2018, selling out its entire 26-night run at the Gilded Balloon in Edinburgh, and going on to win the Scottish Comedy Award for Best Variety Show. Their secret? Flawlessly executed improv that is ingenious as it is funny.

Spontaneous Potter, Saturday 18 January, Gala Theatre, Durham, 7.30pm, £12/£10. galadurham.co.uk
