The – and I’m not afraid to bandy the word around in their case – legendary folk outfit, Fairport Convention, are coming to Sage Gateshead in early February. This is not a drill.

I don’t suppose there’s a month goes by when I’m not slapping Fairport Convention’s ‘Liege & Lief’ album down on my turntable. It helped establish folk rock in the UK and it continues to beguile and delight to this day. (It was also voted the Most Influential Folk Album of All Time by listeners of Radio 2.) Naturally the album is just one string in the band’s incredibly impressive bow with a back catalogue scattered with gem after gem, including ‘50:50@50’, which was released to huge acclaim back in 2017 when they celebrated their 50thanniversary. This year’s Winter Tour will feature a mix of long-established Fairport favourites, as well as new material, and the band will also be celebrating the 50thanniversary of one of their most lauded albums ‘Full House’. Special guests on their latest tour will be the award-winning duo Smith and Brewer, whose close harmonies and guitar playing will amaze and delight. Time to grab yourself a big slice of legendary.

Fairport Convention + Smith & Brewer, Sunday 2 February, Sage Gateshead, 8pm, £25.10-£28.30. sagegateshead.com
