One of the UK’s foremost wildlife artists, Mary Ann Rogers, is currently gearing up for her near-legendary Open Days in November and December, which will be packing the kind of gift ideas that you just won’t find on the high street.

Near-legendary? Scratch that! These Open Days are simply just legendary in my book. Held in the oasis of calm that is the Mary Ann Rogers Gallery in West Woodburn, Hexham, this is THE place to head if you want to relax with a glass of mulled wine, home-made mince pie and the chance to enjoy an exhibition of new paintings, limited edition prints, cards, stationary and quirky gift ideas (including cotton pot bags, scarves, bone china, pom-pom hats, jigsaws and more). The autumn colours have inspired a series of paintings of the landscapes around Redesdale where the low autumn sunshine picks out the undulations of the hills. Of course, more familiar subjects, taking in hounds, guinea fowl, ducks and more, are also a feature of her multi-award-winning work. And when you pay her a visit this year, be sure to ask about her other passion: wild swimming. Apparently she’s at it all year round now, in all weathers, claiming that it offers a different perspective on the world around her. I think I’ll stick with the mulled wine.

Mary Ann Rogers’ Open Days: Friday 22-Sunday 24 November (preview day on Friday) + Saturday 30 November, Sunday 1, Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 December, Mary Ann Rogers Gallery, West Woodburn, Hexham. 11am-5pm. marogers.com
